Whether you have wisdom teeth soon to erupt, or have suffered severe damage to a tooth, you may need to have a tooth extracted. We always take steps to ensure the patient remains comfortable during the procedure. With an extraction, we can help preserve the health and stability of you smile. How do we perform the procedure and when should our Dallas, TX, patients seek treatment?
Reasons for Performing a Tooth Removal
As we touched on above, extracting wisdom teeth is often necessary, as this prevents the onset of painful impaction, damaged teeth, misalignment, and infection. However, we may also remove a tooth to help address misalignment, offering room to straighten the teeth. Extraction also aids in preventing the spread of an advanced infection or removing severely damaged teeth, such as major dental fractures. If your tooth becomes loose due to periodontitis (advanced gum disease) then we may need to extract them.
Ensuring Your Comfort
We know the idea of an extraction can be a little scary, particularly if you already have dental anxiety. We understand, and we don’t want your anxiety to prevent you from undergoing a procedure crucial to your smile’s health. Before the procedure, we always administering a numbing agent to your smile. For those with anxiety, we may also prescribe dental sedation. Using either nitrous oxide (laughing gas) or an oral sedative, we will help you enter a calm and relaxed state. You will be able to respond to the dentist, but will have little to no memory of the procedure itself. However, if you don’t have anxiety then you may not require sedation at all!
The Removal Process
We may gently rock the tooth free from the socket, or we may need to open the jaw, such as in the case of wisdom teeth removal. The procedure is not a prolonged one, in fact people are often surprised at how quickly we complete the treatment. Afterward, we will discuss what and what not to eat or drink as your tooth recovers. We will also offer tips to protect the extraction site as the area heals, helping you avoid any unnecessary complications. If you have any questions about a tooth removal, then please contact our team today. Remember, we will always take your health and comfort into consideration before, during, and after your treatment!
