Periodontal disease, also known as gum disease, affects around 80 percent of American adults, who often leave it untreated because it goes unnoticed. However, if it is not properly addressed, it may lead to other dental and health issues, such as tooth loss, jawbone deterioration, heart disease, or diabetes.

Signs and symptoms that a patient may be experiencing gum disease include red, tender, or swollen gums; bleeding after brushing teeth; and teeth that are loose or have moved.

There are three stages of gum disease: gingivitis, periodontitis, and advanced periodontitis. If detected during the gingivitis stage, a deep cleaning called scaling and root planing can help treat the disease. During the periodontitis and advanced periodontitis stages, more advanced dental treatments may be needed to address the disease.
