Since gum disease often goes unnoticed, it may progress past the stage where a deep cleaning can help treat it. When this happens, minor periodontal surgery may be required to treat the disease. Here are some of the common procedures that we may recommend if you’re suffering from moderate to advanced gum disease.

Gingival Flap Surgery – If a patient’s periodontal pockets are greater than five millimeters in depth, this procedure may be suggested. During the treatment, we separate the gum tissue from the teeth so that we can remove plaque and tartar buildup in the pockets.

Gingivectomy – Some patients experience excess gum tissue that grows over their teeth. If this is the case, during this procedure, we remove the excess tissue so that we can clean the teeth thoroughly.

Gingivoplasty – This treatment is done to help reshape healthy gum tissue surrounding the teeth. For patients who experience tooth recession, a gum graft procedure can be done. The graft is tissue taken from the roof of the patient’s mouth and then placed on the sides of the recessed tooth.

How Will I Know If I Need Surgery?

The best way to stay on top of gum disease is to schedule regular checkups and cleanings with us. During your appointment, we will carefully examine your teeth and look for any signs of gum disease. If we determine that it is present, we will then work together with you on a treatment plan that will help address it properly.
