It might seem like we spend a good deal of time telling you about the good things that can happen when you take good care of your teeth, and keep your preventive dental appointments. In theory, every patient would visit us twice a year and that would keep everyone smiling. The reality is that even with good care, a cavity may need to be filled or moderate to severe dental anxiety may crop up. That is why our sedation dentistry option in Dallas TX is available for our patients who request it.
Sedation For Mild Anxiety: Nitrous Oxide
Nitrous Oxide, or laughing gas, has been used in dental procedures for over 150 years. It is safe for most ages, and leaves the body quickly. This is a good option for patients who don’t comfortably tolerate the sounds of dental cleaning, or who feel antsy and uncomfortable sitting through a procedure such as a dental filling or placing a dental crown. If you have been avoiding basic dental visits due to fear, nitrous oxide can make sure your smile gets the care it needs, and that any issues are addressed as soon as possible, and before they become a bigger issue.
The Option of Oral Sedation
For patients who are more nervous, or for longer procedures such as a root canal treatment, some patients may prefer oral sedation. You will be prescribed a sedative to take before you come to your appointment, so you will be relaxed before, during and after the procedure. We require oral sedation patients to have someone drive them to and from the appointment, as drowsiness and reaction times will be slowed until the sedative clears out of the body.
Does Everyone Need Sedation?
We see many patients each day without a need for sedations. Our beautiful offices were designed with your comfort in mind, from a calm and gentle office staff that is knowledgeable and takes the time to answer questions, to amenities that help you feel comfortable and cared for. However, if feelings of discomfort and anxiety are keeping you from getting the dental care you need, our sedation dentistry option is available.
