Dental anxiety is no fun. For many people, a fear of the dentist means avoiding crucial dental treatment, from routine cleanings to restorative procedures. Fortunately, to help those with anxiety, we have sedation dentistry.
Frequently Asked Questions About Sedation Dentistry
Question: Do I have dental anxiety?
Answer: When was the last time you went to the dentist? If you often avoid care because you’re afraid, then you probably have some level of anxiety. Don’t be afraid to call us up and talk. We know that dental fears are real and we want to help you receive the treatment you need.
Question: How does laughing gas work?
Answer: Also known as nitrous oxide, laughing gas is administered through a mask over the nose and mouth. We can adjust the sedation throughout the procedure. Patients enter a calm and relaxed state with little to no memory of the experience. However, patients will remain conscious and able to respond to the dentist.
Question: Does severe anxiety mean oral sedation is best?
Answer: If you have severe dental anxiety, or other issues that make undergoing treatment difficult, we may suggest oral sedation. We administer this through a pill taken several hours before the procedure. The patient enters a deeper state of relaxation. We will suggest avoiding meals in the six to eight hours before the procedure.
Question: How long do the effects last?
Answer: With nitrous oxide, the effects wear off almost immediately. In fact, many people drive themselves home or return to work or school after treatment. However, oral sedation will take some time, so you will need to arrange for a friend or family member to bring you home. We can send you home with detailed aftercare information as well. If you have any questions about our calming solutions, or if you have a fear of the dentist, then give us a call. Our patient and understanding team are ready to help!
