Do you take great pride in the many steps you have taken to help teach your kids about good dental hygiene, and the general importance of caring for one’s smile? If so, there is one more way you can help emphasize the role oral care plays in protecting their smiles, and that is by celebrating National Children’s Dental Health Month, which happens to be February. Organizers of NCDHM have planned one specific initiative for this year’s campaign, and that is to encourage kids to drink more tap water!
Why Is Dental Care So Important?
Are you wondering why dentists and other healthcare professionals would recommend drinking tap water, specifically? It’s because most cities in America add fluoride to the water.
Fluoride is an organic compound that can help prevent the demineralization of teeth enamel. (This is also why many dentists recommend fluoride sealants to help protect children’s teeth from decay!) Combined with a healthy diet and regular dental hygiene, fluoridated water can help reduce kids’ risk of developing cavities.
How Can You Get Kids Excited About Dental Care?
The American Dental Association has provided helpful kid-appropriate printables, including coloring pages, in honor of National Children’s Dental Health Month. These are a great way to talk with your kids about dental care, and also overall health.
Of course, you can also allow your kids to choose their own toothbrushes and toothpastes, so they have a sense of ownership over their smile’s care. A two-minute long song can also be played to let them know how long they should brush their teeth, while also making the act more fun.
