As you started this new year, did you find yourself wondering if you are doing all you can to keep yourself healthy, and feeling great, in 2017? If so, you might have looked at your diet, and exercise routine, and might have already made any necessary changes accordingly. But have you examined your dental care routine? Many people overlook their dental health, potentially taking for granted their healthy smiles, only to struggle with cavities and other dental problems, down the road. You can help avoid most oral health threats, though, by simply taking proper care of your teeth and gums. That is best done through a combination of daily hygiene and routine professional checkups and cleanings!
Are You Brushing At Least Twice a Day?
Most people brush their teeth at least once a day, but many adults struggle to consistently brush at least twice a day, as recommended by preventive dentists. To help lessen your chance of cavities, and other common dental problems, it is best to brush your teeth at least twice a day, though a third brushing can be beneficial for most patients.
Just stick to a non-abrasive toothpaste, so you don’t inadvertently scratch the surface of your teeth’s enamel. It’s also best for your teeth if you brush once in the morning, and once at night, either as soon as you are done eating for the day or shortly before you go to bed. This helps to minimize how much time bacteria can linger on the teeth and gums.
How About Flossing?
Less than 30 percent of American adults claim to floss their teeth on a regular basis, much less daily. Yet dentists frequently exclaim to patients the importance of daily flossing.
Perhaps it can be helpful and compelling to realize that failing to floss would be much like choosing not to wash one third of your body every time you showered or bathed. At first it might not be an issue, but over time, it would likely have negative effects on your cleanliness, smell and perhaps even your health.
If you really want to protect your teeth, make sure you are flossing once a day.
Do You See the Dentist Twice a Year?
Finally, routine preventive visits to the dentist are also essential to protecting the teeth and gums. That’s true for the whole family, too, not just adults.
That’s because bacteria that does calcify into tartar buildup can only be removed through a professional cleaning. You can help make sure your teeth remain clean and healthy, by simply seeing the dentist at least twice a year for checkups and cleanings.
