How much do you know about fluoride treatments? Are you under the impression that they are specifically for young children but completely inappropriate for adults? Perhaps you’re not sure why they exist at all, which makes it difficult for you to say “yes” or “no” during your child’s dental appointment. The good news is that incorporating fluoride into your family’s dental care can protect your smiles. The better news is that we are happy to answer your questions, so you can make confident preventive care choices for both yourself and your little ones.
Q&A: Fluoride Treatments
Question: What is fluoride?
Answer: Fluoride is a mineral. While you may assume it has been crafted artificially, it is simply a naturally occurring element that we offer in supplement form for effective protection against tooth decay.
Question: Why do you offer fluoride as part of preventive care?
Answer: Fluoride treatments can protect your teeth. Fluoride has the capacity to strengthen your bone tissue by remineralizing enamel that is becoming weakened as a result of plaque. In areas that lose minerals and tissue due to the acids released by bacteria in your mouth (which leads to cavity formation), fluoride can assist in replenishing lost tissue, which strengthens areas that will otherwise continue to weaken.
Question: Who qualifies for fluoride treatments? Are they just for children?
Answer: We nearly always suggest fluoride treatments for children because their teeth are still forming – and because they are still mastering the ability to care for their teeth. Extra protection against tooth decay is wise. However, we may also offer fluoride treatment to adults who are particularly prone to cavities, so teeth remain strong.
