Making it through the early years of smile development with your child can feel so exciting. As baby teeth develop, so do your little one’s speech patterns, chewing habits, and a million other interesting details (like the growth of a beautiful smile). However, once your child’s permanent teeth begin to make an appearance, you may find yourself faced with a series of brand news questions and concerns. Namely, you are likely wondering what you can do to protect these teeth that are going to remain in place for a lifetime. The good news? We offer dental sealants to offer exceptional protection to back teeth. Not sure you know what to make of sealants but you’re ready to learn more? Consider the following details:
Why Sealants?
A dental sealant prevents food particles and bacteria from coming into contact with the chewing surfaces of your child’s back teeth. Unlike teeth in the front of the mouth, the chewing surfaces of these teeth are full of little tiny areas where the bacteria in plaque (and stray food particles) can hide or become lodged. This is problematic because your child needs to remove these substances to prevent tooth decay. However, because teeth are filled with fissures and grooves – and are quite hard to access – the chance of cavity development rises. By placing dental sealants over these surfaces, you allow us to create an effective barrier that causes these concerns to become worries of the past.
What Are Dental Sealants?
Rest assured, the treatment itself usually requires a single visit and is comfortable for your child. We will delicately apply a thin coating of clear plastic on your child’s back teeth – over the chewing surfaces only. This coating will set and will not be visible to you, your child, or other children. We, however, will be able to detect and monitor the dental sealants over time. Though they may last for many years, we can reapply them when necessary for enhanced protection against tooth decay.
