We often remove wisdom teeth before they erupt, which is usually in a patient’s late teens or early adulthood. For a few, the arrival of these additional molars doesn’t have an impact. However, others could develop misalignment, infection, pain, and even damaged teeth as a result of their eruption. A dental extraction may be necessary for teeth with advanced infection, which may no longer be treatable and could lead to infection spreading to other teeth. We also address severe damage or teeth that have become loose due to periodontitis, the advanced stage of gum disease. If we’re going to correct misalignment, then we may suggest removing a tooth to make room for repositioning the other teeth and improving overall alignment and bite balance.
We will loosen the tooth and then remove it gently with forceps. We then suture the extraction site closed. Our team provides detailed after care instructions for patients, with instructions for brushing and flossing, and even eating, in the hours and days following the procedure. We will also schedule a follow-up visit to monitor your smile and ensure the helping process continues without complication. Of course, we’re always available to answer any questions or address any concerns our patients may have before and after the procedure.
In addition to local anesthesia, we may also prescribe dental sedation. With sedation dentistry, we help our anxious patients remain calm and relaxed throughout the procedure, waking with little to no memory afterward. We have two different options, nitrous oxide and oral sedation. May even use a combination of the two. The effects may take time to wear off, so we often recommend our patients have a friend or family member bring them home. We will monitor you throughout the procedure to ensure your safety and comfort, and be there during your healing process as well. If you have any questions about the dental extraction process, or about any of our other treatment options, then please contact our team today.
