The Common Causes Of Tooth Decay

Why do so many of us develop tooth decay? In today’s blog, we’re going to look at the common causes of tooth decay, and suggest steps for Dallas, TX, residents to take to avoid the onset of cavities. We’re also going to explain the warning signs of a cavity, such as a toothache, and when you should alert your dentist.

Our Diets

When we consume foods high in sugar and starch, this leaves behind particles for bacteria to break down. When bacteria break down particles of sugar and starch, this increases oral acidity while also coating the teeth in plaque. Over time, plaque may weaken tooth enamel, leading to erosion and a greater risk of tooth decay. The plaque also inflames gum tissue, leading to a greater risk of gingivitis and gum disease. To enjoy a cavity-free smile, try to cut back on sugary snacks, such as candy, or starchy ones, such as chips. Drink water instead of soda, sports drinks, energy drinks, or fruit juice. Also, try to add more fresh fruits and vegetables to your diet. Other healthy snack options include nuts, sugar-free gum, and low-fat yogurt.

Lack of Oral Hygiene

When we don’t take proper care of our smiles, this leaves behind food particles and increases the severity of plaque buildup. Each day, you should brush your teeth for two minutes in the morning and again before going to bed. We suggest using a toothpaste that contains fluoride and a toothbrush with soft bristles. You also need to floss every night before bed to remove the bits of food a toothbrush’s bristles cannot reach. Every six months, we urge you to see us for checkups and cleanings. A checkup allows us to watch for the earliest warning signs of tooth decay, while a cleaning completely removes all plaque from the surface of your teeth.

Warning Signs and Solutions

If you attend regularly checkups, then we will identify possible signs of decay before you experience painful symptoms. Otherwise, you may not know you need treatment until you begin to experience tooth sensitivity or toothaches. Don’t ignore any pain in your tooth, instead let us know as soon as possible.
