How Does A Filling Stop A Cavity?

When a cavity forms, this could mean serious discomfort and even the risk of a missing tooth unless we treat the issue. In order to halt a cavity and return smiles to optimal heath, your Dallas, TX, dentist may recommend a dental filling. Using a metal-free and lifelike material, we can offer a natural-looking and long-lasting solution to a cavity.

The Causes of a Cavity

How does a cavity form in the first place? Tooth decay is possible when harmful bacteria has access to the inner layers of dentin, which are more sensitive and porous than the protective outer layer of tooth enamel. This access is possible when injury, such as a chip or crack, damages the outer enamel. In addition, poor oral hygiene could enable plaque buildup to accumulate, weakening and eroding the enamel and leading to a cavity. Unless treated, tooth sensitivity and toothaches could occur as the decay grows more severe. In some cases, the tooth could eventually become infected or even become lost!

Stopping Decay with a Filling

A filling can halt most cases of tooth decay in just one visit. We begin by examining the tooth and removing the decay. We then prepare the filling material, a metal-free composite resin that blends glass and acrylic compounds. The material is applied in several layers and can be shaded to match the color of the tooth. After we apply the material, we will shape the tooth as we cure the composite resin under a light. Finally, we polish the tooth for a more natural appearance. The entire procedure only takes one visit to complete, and halts tooth decay to prevent an infection.

Keeping Your Smile Healthy

Following treatment, we can discuss changes to you daily routine to help prevent future cases of tooth decay. For example, try to cut back on sugary foods and drinks, which leave behind particles that feed harmful oral bacteria. Start your day by brushing your teeth for two minutes with a soft bristled toothbrush and toothpaste that contains fluoride. At night, do this again and also floss in between each tooth. Make time to see us every six months as well for a checkup and cleaning, so we can watch for the earliest warning signs of a cavity and administer treatment to protect the smile. If you have any questions about treating and preventing a cavity, or about our single visit dental fillings, then contact our team today.
