People take small things, like chewing food or the ability to speak properly, for granted, until the loss of teeth makes these simple tasks almost impossible. If you lose your natural teeth, there are definite benefits to having dentures compared to leaving your mouth without an adequate number of teeth. Dentures are often-removable replacements made of a mixture of metal and plastic that rest on the gums where natural teeth were.

What Types of Dentures are available

There are four main types of dentures:

  • Complete Dentures

Complete dentures are full replacements for all of your upper or lower teeth. These dentures can be made and placed within six months after tooth extraction

  • Immediate Dentures

Immediate dentures are placed into the mouth immediately after tooth extraction, and used as a temporary set to stabilize the bone and tissue.

  • Overdentures

Overdentures are similar to complete dentures, but not all the teeth are extracted.  The difference is one or more natural teeth are used for support to provide more stabilization during chewing.

  • Partial Dentures

Partial dentures correct gaps in your smile when only some of your teeth are missing.  These dentures prevent your remaining teeth from shifting, and can help prevent further tooth loss.

How Long Will Dentures Last

Dentures are very durable, but will not last forever.  With good care dentures can last many years, but accidents do happen and they can chip, break, or even bend out of shape. To help you carefully handle your dentures and maintain their appearance and integrity, we advise;

  • Using a brush specifically for dentures, and a denture cleaner.
  • Storing dentures in a container with denture-cleaning solution.
  • Soaking dentures in warm water; hot water can damage them
