Preparing For Oral Surgery

When you are told you may need oral surgery to restore your smile, it can be stressful. You may worry about how long the appointment can take, if you will be comfortable, and how long you will need for recovery. At Gentle Smiles in Dallas, TX, we are here to make your oral surgery treatment as comfortable as possible. In today’s blog, we’re here to talk about what you should know before your tooth extraction.

When A Tooth Extraction Is Necessary

There are many reasons why your dentist may recommend that one of your pearly whites is removed. One common reason is if the structure is damaged or severely decayed. In some cases, your dentist may be able to restore the area with a dental crown or filling and you may not need removal. However, if the area is not able to be restored, extraction may be necessary. Wisdom teeth are also commonly removed to prevent impaction or harm your other pearly whites.

What To Expect During Your Visit

When you come in for your appointment, we will first carefully examine your oral cavity, and we may take X-rays to add to our records. After this, we will prepare you for the oral surgery by numbing the area. If you experience dental anxiety, we may be able to offer other forms of sedation to help you remain comfortable throughout your visit. Your dentist will gently make an incision and remove the tooth carefully. Finally, the space will be closed, and gauze may be placed to minimize any bleeding. Your team will give you specific aftercare instructions to ensure that the area heals properly. If you have any questions, please reach out to your team.

Can You Avoid A Tooth Extraction?

In most cases, your dentist will recommend removing your dental structure as a last case scenario. When you have a serious cavity that leads to a toothache and discomfort, your dentist may first try to restore the tooth with treatments such as a dental filling or root canal. Dental fillings may be used for more mild cases of decay, and a root canal may be necessary if your cavity has reached the pulp of your dental structures. If you are unable to have these treatments done or the restoration fails, you may need to have the structure removed before further damage occurs to your smile. To avoid needing these restorations or a removal, remember to practice a daily oral hygiene routine and visit your dentist regularly. These steps can prevent many common oral health issues and protect your smile’s health.
