Losing teeth can be embarrassing, and lead to problems with your smile’s health and function. In order to offer our Dallas, TX, patients a lifelike solution to tooth loss, whether minor or advanced, we may recommend implant dentistry. In today’s blog, let’s look at the benefits of tackling tooth loss with dental implants!
Why do we lose our natural teeth? For some, an injury could lead to an avulsed (knocked-out) tooth. A severe cavity or infection could damage the tooth to the point that removal is crucial for preventing the spread of infection. However, the most common cause is gum disease. You see, when gum disease isn’t managed with routine treatment, the advanced stage, known as periodontitis, can form. This stage causes the connective tissues between the teeth and gums to break down, leading to loose and lost teeth. Along with tooth loss comes loss of jawbone density, further tooth loss, an aged appearance, misalignment, and difficulties eating and speaking.
Dental implants don’t need to be held in place with suction, or clasps or crowns. Instead, we insert them right into the jawbone. Where they bond with the bone tissue through a process known as osseointegration, which secures them like natural tooth roots. They can then last for decades and stimulate the growth of jawbone tissue, preventing loss of mass and density and prevent further missing teeth. You don’t need to remove them for soaking or cleaning, just care for them as you would a natural tooth.
After we insert them, we need to wait for osseointegration to take place, which is usually between three and four months. After this, we focus on the visible portion of your new tooth. An abutment will be added to the dental implant, and used to secure a custom-made crown. Not only will the crown look natural, but it can absorb bite forces and pressure too. If you have advanced tooth loss, then we can attach a custom bridge or denture to multiple dental implants, helping you enjoy a full and healthy smile. With routine care, including brushing, flossing, and routine checkups and cleanings, your new teeth could last decades, possibly even a lifetime.
