How We Ease Anxiety With Dental Sedation

Do you have dental anxiety? Many people feel some level of apprehension about seeing the dentist, whether due to lack of experience or possibly a bad past experience. We understand, but we don’t want this anxiety to stand between you and a healthy, bright smile. In today’s blog, your Dallas, TX, dentist looks at how we address anxiety with dental sedation.

When We Prescribe Sedation Dentistry

If we talk to you and find you have serious nervousness about dental care, which could impact your ability to undergo even minor dental procedures, we may look at your medical history and decide whether to employ sedation to help you remain calm and relaxed. In addition, we may suggest this option for young children undergoing restoration placement, or for adults undergoing major oral health treatments, such as dental extraction or dental implant placement. However, the option we choose will depend on a number of different factors.

Nitrous Oxide and Oral Sedation

We have two very different choices for those in need of a calming agent. The first is the most common, one safe for kids and adults alike. Nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, is administered through a mask over your nose. The effects occur quickly, with the patient entering a calm state, but remaining conscious and able to respond to the dentist. The effects wear off quickly, so once your procedure ends you can drive yourself home or even return to work or school.

Oral sedation offers a more substantial calming effect and is often prescribed to those with high levels of nervousness, or those undergoing extensive treatment. In the six to eight hours before the procedure, we suggest only eating light meals and drinking water. You will then take special medication before you come to our office. Once you arrive, the calming effect will kick in and we can begin treatment. While you will have little to no memory of the procedure, you will still be conscious and able to respond to the dentist. Since the effects are more substantial, they will take time to wear off completely. You should arrange for a friend or a family member to bring you home. We will also send you home with any aftercare instructions.
