How To Care For Your Smile At Home

We suggest patients of all ages make time to see their Dallas, TX, dentist at least once every six months, so we monitor smiles and help ensure optimal oral health. But what about the times between these visits? In today’s blog, we’re going to discuss daily routines that could help your family enjoy healthy smiles and reduce the risk of everything from cavities to gum disease.

Watch What You Eat

Did you know that foods high in starch and sugar leave behind particles for harmful bacteria to break down and consume? As bacteria consume particles of sugar and starch, this causes oral acidity levels to rise and could lead to plaque buildup accumulating on the teeth. These factors weaken tooth enamel and inflame gum tissue, increasing the risk of cavities and gum disease. Instead, try to add more fresh fruits and veggies to your diet. Offer kids healthier snack choices, such as cheeses, nuts, fruits, and sugar-free gum. Drink water instead of energy drinks, soda, or sports drinks. Remember, while beverages with fruit juice seems healthy, these products contain  a lot of sugar.

Brushing and Floss

No matter your age, you need to brush your teeth for two minutes when you wake up and again before going to bed. Be sure to use a toothbrush with soft bristles, as this helps prevent inadvertent damage to the enamel and gums should you brush too hard. People ages three and up need to use a toothpaste that contains fluoride, a mineral that strengthens outer tooth enamel. Before bed, everyone needs to floss thoroughly between their teeth, which removes the bits of food that toothbrush often cannot reach. You need to care for your smile from home every day of the week, and be sure to monitor your little ones to make sure they’re taking proper care of their smile. We would be happy to offer tips and instructions for proper brushing and flossing, making sure you’re cleaning your teeth properly each day.

Avoid Tobacco Products

Did you know that smoking and tobacco use increases the risk of gum disease, tooth loss, and even oral cancer? We urge people to quit right away. Doing so can help protect the health of your smile, and lower your risk of developing several forms of cancer.
