Should Kids See Us Every Six Months?

We recently covered the subject of dental sealants, and how these unique preventive acrylic coatings could help children in Dallas, TX, avoid tooth decay. But in addition to these treatments, what about routine visits? Do kids need regular six-month checkups and cleanings like adults? If so, what happens during these visits?

A Child’s First Visit

The first time a child needs to see us may happen earlier than you assume. We want to see kids around age one, right after the first baby tooth erupts. During this visit, we will meet with you and your little one and examine his or her smile to ensure teeth are erupting properly. Typically, no treatment happens during the first visit. However, at around age two we will begin suggesting routine checkups and cleanings.

Checkups and Cleanings

During the checkup, we will take detailed x-rays of the smile and carefully examine the smile to assess the state of their oral health. We will watch for common problems, such as tooth decay, gingivitis, or developing misalignment. If necessary, we can offer treatment, such as a lifelike dental filling or possibly dental sealants or fluoride treatments. Next, we will clean the teeth. The process involves removing all plaque and tartar from the teeth with a manual tool and ultrasonic scaling device. We then polish the teeth thoroughly. The process of removing plaque reduces the risk of cavities, bad breath, teeth stains, and gingivitis. With the right steps and attention, we can help your little one maintain optimal oral health for many years to come.

Keeping Up Care at Home

In addition to seeing us for treatment, we suggest routine care from home as well. We will discuss proper brushing and flossing with you and your little one. As soon as teeth arrive, they need to be cleaned or brushed in the morning and again before going to bed. Brushing should take two minutes and flossing should reach up and down the length of each tooth, dipping below the gum line. These actions help protect smiles from both cavities and periodontal problems. We also suggest a diet with fewer sugary foods and drinks, as these items leave behind particles for bacteria to break down, a process linked to the onset of cavities and other oral health issues. If you have any questions about caring for little smiles at home, or if you’re ready to schedule a visit for your children, then please contact our team today.
