  1. True or False: A calming solution can help nervous patients.
  2. True or False: We offer nitrous oxide.
  3. True or False: Oral sedation offers a more serious relaxation option.

Answer Key

  1. True. Dental anxiety can prevent a patient from seeing the dentist for even minor preventive care, which increases the risks of tooth decay, infection, gum disease, and even adult tooth loss. We don’t want a fear of the dentist due to never going or having a bad experience in the past prevent you from maintaining optimal oral health. We can assess your medical history and current health to decide if, and which, sedation option is right for you.
  2. True. Also known as laughing gas, we administer this through a mask over the nose. The gas is breathed in and allows the patient to enter a relaxed and calm state. The patient will have little to no memory of the procedure and the effects wear off almost immediately. Many patients return to work or school afterward!
  3. True. Oral sedation is for more serious cases of anxiety or helping those with a gag reflex. A pill is taken prior to the procedure. The patient enters a deeper state of relaxation. The patient will feel a little groggy afterward, so we suggest arranging for a friend or family member to provide a ride home. The patient will again have no memory of the procedure. We also suggest avoiding a large meal in the six to eight hours prior to the procedure.
