What Happens During My Checkup And Cleaning?

Every few months, we want to see our patients for a routine checkup and cleaning. Unfortunately, many people assume that as long as they’re brushing and flossing, these visits aren’t essential. However, preventive care is crucial for avoiding the onset of serious oral health problems.

Frequently Asked Questions About Checkups and Cleanings

Question: Will the dentist used advanced technology?

Answer: Yes! We use digital x-rays and intraoral cameras to obtain a detailed view of your smile. We can see images of your teeth and gums, as well as what’s beneath them. We obtain these images instantly and show them to you chairside. We can walk you through the diagnostic process and help you better understand what’s happening with your smile.

Question: What issues will the dentist look for?

Answer: We look for signs of tooth decay, gingivitis, and gum disease. We also look for indicators of wear or fiction that might identify TMJ disorder or bruxism (teeth grinding). Every year, we also perform an oral cancer screening for our adult patients as well. Identifying serious problems in the earliest stages helps improve the chances of a full recovery.

Question: What does a dental cleaning involve?

Answer: With a dental cleaning, we use a manual tool or an ultrasonic scaler to remove plaque from the surface of the teeth. We then thoroughly polish the teeth. The treatment only takes a short while and helps prevent the onset of decay or gum disease by removing plaque, a bacterial byproduct. Patients then leave with a brighter smile, fresher breath, and a healthier smile.

Question: How often should I see the dentist?

Answer: We recommend seeing us every six months for a checkup and cleaning. However, patients with high risk factors for gum disease may need to see us every three to four months. The exact time will of course depend on the health of your smile.
