Have you become worried lately because your bad breath is lingering? If you’ve already made all of the obvious attempts that you can think of to rectify the situation and that not-so-fresh odor is still hanging about, we suggest that you become familiar with why it’s happening – and what to do. The good news is that there are some common reasons for a smelly mouth. In addition, you can usually clear up bad breath with preventive dentistry and a few other simple tips.

Why You Have Bad Breath

For starters, bad breath can be cause by eating extremely strong-smelling foods (such as garlic). A good way to begin addressing your bad breath is eliminating these foods from your diet for a few days to see if your bad breath subsides. If not, the cause of your problem is likely bacteria (which is easily diminished with preventive dentistry). Unfortunately, the bacteria in your mouth often give off a very unpleasant odor – the more bacteria you have, the worse your breath

What You Can Do

We suggest that you take a look at your daily dental hygiene routine on a daily basis. Once you’ve ensured that you are brushing twice a day and flossing once, you may move onto the following suggestions:

  • Address Congestion: Congestion provides a welcoming area for bacteria to grow – if you’re congested, address allergies or other problems to eliminate this factor.
  • Brush Better: Are you brushing your best? If not, you may simply be missing bacteria in your smile. Use a soft-bristle toothbrush and make sure you brush for two minutes, twice a day, addressing every surface of your teeth (along your gumline, too). Brush your tongue, as well. For further removal of plaque and bacteria, schedule your preventive dentistry visit.
  • Hydrate: When your mouth becomes dry, bacteria proliferate because nothing is washing them away. Drink more water to keep your mouth moist.
