Dental Checkups: Our Goals

magnifyingglassPerhaps you know what to expect from your dental checkup. You know the types of instruments and equipment we will be using and you understand why you’re seeing us once every six month on a very general level. Since your oral health is important to you and we like for our patients to feel informed, we encourage you to become a bit more familiar with the overall goals of checkups. This will provide you with an even broader understanding of what’s going on, so you come to realize just how comprehensive these exams are and how they benefit your smile and supporting structures.

Goal #1: Seek Out Signs Of Change or Concern

We look for signs of change during your dental checkup. This is one of the reasons we suggest six-month visits. By consistently monitoring your mouth, we can more easily identify something that looks or seems different. What types of changes are we looking for? Well, perhaps we notice you are suffering from a newly forming cavity or your gums look inflamed. We may look for concerns that may result in serious complications, such as misalignment – this can cause TMJ disorder and bruxism, which lead to headaches and other chronic forms of discomfort.

Goal #2: Speak With You About Symptoms

Certain aspects of your oral health are much more easily uncovered by your own observations. For instance, if you’re dealing with some jaw discomfort, we may not be able to see this immediately with our eyes. However, by speaking with you about your feelings and experiences, we will be able to gather evidence of symptoms that may point to an underlying concern. We can then further investigate and determine your needs.

Goal #3: Offer Necessary Treatment

If your teeth and surrounding structures are in excellent condition then we can send you on your merry way. However, if something is not quite right, your dental checkups gives us time to diagnose the concern and offer effective treatment, so we can quickly restore your oral health.
